El Nino

I have officially embraced the El Nino weather that we've been having on the West Coast. Embrace = tolerate. I sell umbrellas for a living (and bags too!), so I am happy with a certain amount of rain, but this year has shown me exactly how much rain I can embrace (tolerate). Like most people, I "embrace" the rain because we need it, but also because it's also good for my business. I can repeat this every time it rains, but that doesn't mean I want it pouring down on me! Yesterday, it hit me that like me, most people associate rain with negative thoughts....BUT it's up to us marketing/branding professionals to turn that negative into a positive. I see slogans like, "We've got you covered", "Let us protect you from the storm", and "Thinking of you rain or shine" used often in umbrella land. But I want take this a step further than a simple slogan. Consider the fact that the playing field is leveled when a rain storm comes along. We as individuals are all in the same situation - we're either going to be dry because of an umbrella (or less commonly a raincoat) or get wet. This is really a chance for your clients to instill some trust in their customers. If they protect their customer, employee, volunteer, etc. from rain, they will remember it. They will also remember if said umbrella breaks, where again they will be left vulnerable in the rain. This is why I love working for Peerless. We sell quality umbrellas and most of my customers know that I will tell you if are leaning towards a lesser quality umbrella. I would honestly rather you buy a $2 pen than a $2 umbrella, because each of us (me, Peerless, you, your client) will be left with our name in the trash.....after all isn't that where broken umbrellas go. Do you want someone walking down the street to look down and see your company's logo in the trash? I sure don't.

I guess I got off course here (oops!), but what I'm trying to say is that it's raining more now than in the past 3 or 4 years, so strike while the iron's hot and present a good quality umbrella to your clients. And as much as we all want summer to show up soon, the weather man keeps telling us that rain is in the forecast. So instead of complaining about it (me included), let's generate some business from it and keep our client's dry while we're at it!
